In the past few years, our cities have changed faster than ever. Expanding concrete spaces have replaced much of the green, disrupting natural ecosystems and cutting off the delicate connections that once kept them thriving. This rapid urban growth has taken a serious toll on biodiversity and Delhi NCR stands as one of the most affected examples. As green cover disappears, we lose not just trees or open spaces, but also the invisible systems that keep our environment balanced such as pollination, pest control, and even local climate stability.
Among the many species impacted, butterflies tell a particularly powerful story. These colorful creatures act as bioindicators of ecosystem health or how well our natural habitats are doing. Yet, in cities across India, urban butterfly populations have fallen by nearly 45% over the past few decades, signaling a much larger ecological imbalance.
Wings of Change was founded to respond to this very prominent yet sidelined crisis through hands-on habitat creation, awareness programs, and youth-led conservation efforts. By engaging students and communities in restoring butterfly habitats, the project hopes to ignite a culture of environmental stewardship, one protected butterfly and one small garden to house it, at a time.Â
